As per this post at Adwords Help, Google doesn’t recommend using the keyword insertion feature in the display url:
For example, say you have the
following three keywords:
best hotel
“best hotel”
[best hotel]
And a display URL that reads www.BookMyHotel.com/{KeyWord:HotelSale}
If a user searches “best hotel”, he/she will see the same display URL
(www.BookMyHotel.com/besthotel) as a user who searched “find best
hotel” or “best Miami hotel” (assuming the “find best hotel” and “best
Miami hotel” are not keywords included in the account).
Although this seems like a slick trick, I don’t recommend using
keyword insertion in the display URL. If you do, be very careful that
all of the keywords in the ad group list work with this format.
Best of luck,
AdWordsPro Sarah
Despite this many presumably successful Adwords advertisers - including none other than Perry Marshall himself - are utilizing this technique. Here is one of Perry’s Adwords I found on Google:
“Beat the Adwords System”
Access 100 Million People in 10 Min
Get The Definitive Fast Start Guide
PerryMarshall.com/adwords
When I checked the destination url in Perry’s ad, it was different from his display url that is seen above, thus proving that he uses the keyword insertion feature in at least this particular ad.
Using the keyword insertion feature in the display url makes sense to me for these reasons:
1. Your ad will be more relevant. Because of this…
2. You’ll get more click-throughs - thanks to the keyword being in bold text. Which means…
3. Your ad will rank higher in the search results. Which means…
4. You’ll get even more click-throughs. And best of all…
5. Your Quality Score will improve! Now you have the opportunity to improve your ROI by lowering your bid without ending up lower in the search results than you would have ended up before utilizing the display url keyword insertion feature.
Why? Because higher click-through-rates mean you can bid less then your competitors with lower click-through-rates while maintaining comparable ranking in the search results. You see, Google rewards(or penalizes) advertisers for their click-through-rates(or lack thereof).
Bottom Line: Try using the display url keyword insertion feature - you might save some money!

Monday, Yahoo! announced they will begin rolling out changes to their crawling, indexing and ranking algorithms. As per Priyank Garg & Sharad Verma of Yahoo! Search, “you may see some ranking changes and page shuffling in the index.” I for one noticed that some of my sites had moved around in the Yahoo! serps. Most of of these moves have been positive ones.

I use the SearchStatus toolbar extension in my Firefox browser. It instantly displays the Alexa rank, and Google PageRank of the page I am currently viewing; further it can be set to highlight no-follow links & so much more. If you aren’t using it with your Firefox browser, you’re missing one of the best things since sliced bread. Get it here now: SearchStatus.
If you said, “Oh, too bad I use Internet Explorer”, - I say to you, “OK, that makes 2 seo professionals that still use IE - you & my grandmother!”.
P.S. I just heard that my grandmother is in the ICU - so I need to log off. I guess you are literally the last of a dying breed!

The age old question that everyone asks, “But is anybody searching for ‘xyz’?” haunts many in this profession of search engine advertising.
So instead of saying to your potential client, “Oh yes there is huge demand for xyz”(while thinking in the back of your head… “gosh I hope I’m right or I’ll never get another project from this company” - How about replying: “Based on data from Microsoft we estimate that there are 3,355 searches for xyz every month in the US.”?
Here’s how it’s done:
Step 1. Login to your MSN paid search account. Click on the “Research” tab, then for this illustration only enter the phrase ‘physical therapist jobs’; then finally click “Find Keywords”. You will see that 210 searches were performed on the MSN for ‘physical therapist jobs’ last month.
Step 2. Based on Hitwise.com data , we see that MSN accounts for 6.26% of US search engine queries. We want to estimate what the total monthly US search engine queries are for this phrase, so we divide the 210 searches per month by MSN’s current percentage of the market share(6.26).
Step 3. If you round to 6 digits, your calculator should show: 33.5463 . This is 1% of the US search engine volume for the term ‘physical therapist jobs’. To get an estimate of the entire US search volume for the term ‘physical therapist jobs’, we multiply 33.5463 by 100. You now know that there are roughly 3,355 US quiries per month on search engines for the phrase ‘physical therapist jobs’.
Step 4. You can now say to your client with integrity and confidence, “Based on data from Microsoft, we estimate that there are 3,355 quiries for the phrase ‘physical therapist jobs’ on search engines per month in the US.”
For those of you who are interested, here is the equation:
Current MSN search volume = MSN
Current MSN market share = share
Total US search engine queries = Total
MSN
share X 100 = Total
